This is not a Halloween cake. Its a birthday cake for a 6 year old girl who wanted a spider party for her birthday. So her mother, being the amazing mother that she is, gave her a spider cake. Most people would think this is strange, even myself, but it's wonderful that this little girl went against the main stream pink princess and barbie parties that most girls ask for.
This was a banana cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream filling and decorated with buttercream icing. It was a round 10" cake as the base with the web decoration and then I added a 6" half dome cake on the top to serve as the body of the spider. I coated the dome with black buttercream and used straws as the legs. I wrapped the straws in black fondant and then black icing. The eyes are fondant and then added a fondant plaque in front with "Happy Birthday" to finish it off. This is not a Halloween cake. This is a cake for my niece Miranda. She is a smart, quirky and girly 8 year old. One of her favorite shows was Scooby Doo . I'm sure everyone is familiar with the show. No? Its a bunch of detective teens and their talking dog solving mysteries. Since she was a huge fan, this was the only cake that would do.
We first went to Toys R Us to pick out the figurines. Once we had those (they were not toxic) we built the cake together. This is a chocolate and vanilla cake with fresh banana/strawberry filling. It was decorated using vanilla buttercream. Miranda picked out the colors and the design all by herself. I had asked her if she was excited about Halloween. Maybe that would be the reason behind her decision, but she said no. In the show, she explained, the group always solved spooky mysteries. She wanted the cake to show the scary ghosts and monsters that were on the show. This is the same girl who wears pink nail polish and calls herself Princess Miranda when she thinks no one is listening. She is always full of surprises.
This is her outside about to light the candles. She added the little red gift box on top of the cake because as she said,"Presents are an important part of birthdays". We had a BBQ birthday party for her in our backyard. She was so proud of her cake and I am so proud of her.
